ABOUT AZNAR SHIPPING
COMPANY HISTORY
BACKGROUND
During the early part of the 90’s, Mr. Emmanuel B. Aznar acquired a barge named LCT MELRIVIC 1 for use by E.B. Aznar Mining Co. It was primarily to transport coal from Cebu to Negros and occasionally, tramping contract for clients to various ports in the Philippines.
When the demand for local coal began to drop due to the influx of cheaper imported coal, it was decided to maximize the usage of the vessel and engage in the shipping business to serve untapped and underserved markets for which a lack of bottoms was seen. E.B. AZNAR SHIPPING CORPORATION (EBASCO) was incorporated on December 11, 1992 as a family corporation of Emmanuel B. Aznar.
The principal place of business was at the 2nd floor of Aznar Bldg., T. Padilla Street, Cebu City. The corporation is composed of Emmanuel B. Aznar as President, Mrs. Zoraida S. Aznar as Corporate Secretary and Treasurer and the children, Dr. Theresa S. Aznar, Dr. Odalie Aznar Madamba and Atty. Alexander S. Aznar as directors.
On August 1993 the first RORO vessel, MELRIVIC 2, was acquired and operational by October 1993 plying the TUBURAN – ESCALANTE route.
This was subsequently transferred to the Dunggoan Danao Port, Danao City to Pingag Isabel Leyte Port, Isabel Leyte route. The second RORO vessel MELRIVIC 3 was acquired on April 1994 and operational by August 1994 plying the Carmen – Isabel route.
In the early part of 1996 it was transferred to Danao Port to augment the DANAO – ISABEL route. Three passenger service buses were added to compliment the vessel’s service, to fetch outgoing passengers from Shoe Mart (SM) to Danao port and get the incoming passengers from Isabel port to Cebu City. In latter part on 1995, the company decided to add more vessels. In November, three cargo vessels were acquired from Shimizu and Co. Ltd., a Japanese shipbroker. Loaded inside these cargo vessels were three fast craft vessels which are presently operated by a sister company of EBASCO, Cebu Trident Navigation (CTN).
In 1996 another RORO vessel PALAWAN TRADERS renamed MELRIVIC 7 was acquired. Thereafter, MELRIVIC 9, a 320-passenger vessel, was acquired in February 1997. Of the three cargo vessels, MELRIVIC 8 was the first to operate on May 1996. MELRIVIC 5 followed suit on September 1996.
MELRIVIC 6 became operational in the late January 199s7. Due to adverse market conditions of the bulk cargo sector, the Company decided to discontinue its bulks cargo operations and instead focus on its Roll on/Roll Off & passenger shipping operations which up until the present day has been the company’s core business.
At the beginning of 2014 the company started a fleet modernization program which began with the acquisition of two brand new LCT’s namely MANOLING 1 AND MANOLING 2 which were named after our company founder Emmanuel “Manoling” Aznar”. MANOLING 1 was built in China and arrived in 2016 while MANOLING 2 was locally built and was finished in 2016. Our latest brand-new vessel, MANOLING 3, arrived from China in 2021 amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic.
This ongoing fleet modernization program, Amidst the Covid -19 crisis is a testament to our commitment and resolve to achieve the mission and vision we have set for ourselves at the company.
